Unemloyed and Depressed

I just want to encourage any deeply depressed unemployed person who may visit your site.

Isaiah 9:13 says: “For the people do not turn to Him who strikes them, Nor do they seek the Lord of hosts”

I have been unemployed for almost a year.  At first I enjoyed my newfound freedom while I kept on applying for jobs hoping there was one for me right round the corner.  Days went on to weeks and then months and now almost a year is up and I have found nothing.  I am 51 years old, single and therefore have no liabilities.  I have to fend for myself and no one else.  But the stigma of being jobless was soon brought cruelly home to me by the careless words of a one-time friend.  She remarked that I was “just sitting on the fat of my butt doing nothing”.  Those words stung me to the quick and today they still rankle.  But then, she’s not a believer and I realize that I have to make allowances for that.  I don’t think a born-again Christian would ever utter those words to anyone.

Today I was overcome with depression and cried out to the Lord: “Lord you know I love you and care about your great name, why have you kept me unemployed for so long” and suddenly I remembered the words of Isaiah 9:13 and it was as if the Lord was telling me to turn to Him, even though I was so wounded.  It is such a temptation to turn for immediate relief to someone else or something else other than the Lord.  You want to call a friend, switch on the TV, open the fridge, contemplate suicide, hit the bottle – anything but turn to Him but that’s precisely what we should do.

After my desperate cry to the Lord I logged on to my computer and there in my inbox were two job offers.  I was amazed, the God of the most astounding miracles the world has ever known will still perform miracles for you because “Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear” (Isaiah 59:1).  Glory be to God: He remains the same, yesterday, today and forever.

Remember the words of Jehoshaphat as he prayed to the Lord in 2 Chronicles 20:12 “for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes [are] upon Thee”.  The Lord gloriously rewarded Jehoshaphat’s trust and all he had to do was to “stand still and see the salvation of the Lord”

No I have not attained employment yet but there’s one thing I am going to do, I am going to turn to Him and leave the matter of my employment with Him.

I am encouraging you to do the same.  The Lord will NEVER leave you nor forsake you.  You are His child.  “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” (Isaiah 49:15)

If you are not His child, here is how you can become one.  (Please provide the link to the article on your site “Unreligious, unspiritual or agnostic).

I would like to close with the words of an anonymous Christian:

Trusting
Keep faithful in your work. Let your aim be as steady as a star. Leave the world alone to brawl and bawl. You may be assaulted, wronged, insulted, slandered, wounded and rejected. You may be abused by foes, forsaken by friends, and despised and rejected of men. But with steadfast determination and unfaltering zeal,  pursue the great purpose of your life that He has given you and the object of your being, until at last you can say, “I have finished the work which Thou gavest me to do.”
